The principles
behind daily care.
Eleven anchors from the Neijing connect seasonal care, form and spirit, food, rhythm, effort, and suitability. Short Chinese excerpts are followed by our English reading and a practical application.
素问 · 上古天真论
Follow yin–yang; care for form and spirit
法于阴阳,和于术数……故能形与神俱。
Editorial translation
Take yin and yang as a guide and harmonise with methods of cultivation … so that bodily form and spirit remain together.
Meaning. The opening chapter places patterns of living, food, exertion, and form-and-spirit together. It supplies a whole-person framework rather than a single supplement target.
Daily application. Review a demanding day as a whole: did work crowd out food, movement, rest, or supportive contact? Choose the part that is least sustainable.
Reading limit. Shushu here is not simply fortune-telling or a modern body score. The chapter’s idealised longevity account is not a guaranteed outcome.

Give food, daily rhythm, and effort a measure
食饮有节,起居有常,不妄作劳。
Editorial translation
Eat and drink with measure; keep regular daily habits; avoid reckless exertion.
Meaning. The three clauses belong together: rhythm is supported by nourishment and a workload that leaves room for recovery. “Regular” need not mean an identical clock time for every person.
Daily application. For a busy working day, protect a workable meal, a sleep opportunity, and a familiar activity interval. Adjust one recurring pressure point first.
Reading limit. The line does not set modern portions, sleep hours, or exercise doses.

Nourish yang in spring–summer and yin in autumn–winter
春夏养阳,秋冬养阴,以从其根。
Editorial translation
Nourish yang in spring and summer, and yin in autumn and winter, following their root.
Meaning. In the chapter’s account, care follows emergence, flourishing, gathering, and storage. Yang is not the only thing to nourish; autumn–winter gives attention to inward settling and conserving. Winter also says not to disturb yang.
Daily application. Let periods of activity include recovery. As your routine becomes quieter, preserve rest and nourishment while maintaining suitable movement.
Reading limit. Yangsheng is broader than adding heat or taking tonics. Interpretations vary; these are short editorial readings, not a settled clinical formula.

Keep the spirit settled
恬惔虚无,真气从之,精神内守。
Editorial translation
With calm and freedom from excessive striving, true qi follows; essence and spirit are kept within.
Meaning. The passage values composure and freedom from excessive demands. Jing and shen have traditional meanings that cannot be reduced to a modern mood score.
Daily application. Give one part of the day fewer competing demands: finish a meal without work, make a quiet transition after work, or talk with someone supportive.
Reading limit. Calm is not compulsory cheerfulness, emotional suppression, or a reason to blame someone for illness.

Seek coordination, not maximum yang
阴平阳秘,精神乃治。
Editorial translation
When yin is balanced and yang is securely maintained, essence and spirit are ordered.
Meaning. The aim is a coordinated relationship: support and containment belong with activity and warming. Nourishing yang makes sense within this relationship.
Daily application. Pair activity with recovery and warmth with comfort. After a tiring day, reducing the next demand can be more appropriate than adding another stimulating practice.
Reading limit. This is a traditional account, not a claim that yin and yang can be measured as equal quantities.

Let food categories complement one another
五谷为养,五果为助,五畜为益,五菜为充。
Editorial translation
Grains nourish, fruits assist, domesticated-animal foods supplement, and vegetables provide completion.
Meaning. The passage describes food groups together in the historical food world. It invites a varied food pattern rather than elevating a single ingredient into a cure.
Daily application. Build a familiar meal around a staple, vegetables, and a suitable protein source. Vary choices over the week according to preference, access, and dietary needs.
Reading limit. These categories are not modern nutrient ratios or a requirement to eat animal foods. The meal example is a contemporary application.

Bring the five flavours into accord
是故谨和五味。
Editorial translation
Therefore, take care to harmonise the five flavours.
Meaning. The five flavours are sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, and salty. The surrounding discussion treats flavours as capable of nourishing but also of causing harm through excess in the traditional account. The point includes moderation, not only correspondences.
Daily application. Avoid making one strongly flavoured food or drink the centre of every meal. Keep a varied pattern without attempting to “treat an organ” by taste.
Reading limit. Five-flavour theory is not interchangeable with modern nutrient science.

Understand the classical account of fluid distribution
饮入于胃,游溢精气,上输于脾。脾气散精,上归于肺。
Editorial translation
Drink enters the stomach; its refined qi is distributed upward to the spleen. The spleen disperses this refinement upward to the lung.
Meaning. The passage describes connected functions of stomach, spleen, lung, and subsequent fluid pathways. Later Chinese medicine organises this material into its account of transformation and transportation.
Daily application. Use this to understand why traditional assessment considers eating, digestion, and fluids together. Everyday care begins with suitable meals and ordinary activity, not a self-prescribed purging routine.
Reading limit. This is a historical functional model, not a diagram of modern anatomy. Internal dampness is not simply wet weather or excess drinking water.

Allow for differences between people
人之生也,有刚有柔,有弱有强,有短有长,有阴有阳。
Editorial translation
People differ in firmness and softness, weakness and strength, shortness and length, yin and yang.
Meaning. The passage introduces differences between people in a clinical discussion. It supports attending to the person rather than assuming one seasonal method fits everyone.
Daily application. An experienced exerciser, someone returning after illness, and a person working nights may need different routines. Start with current ability and established care needs.
Reading limit. This passage does not validate an online constitution diagnosis or prediction of lifespan from appearance.

Choose what suits the circumstances
杂合以治,各得其所宜。
Editorial translation
Combine methods in treatment so that each receives what is suitable.
Meaning. The original chapter discusses regional differences, ways of living, and treatment. Its direct subject is clinical practice. Applying the principle to everyday scheduling is an editorial extension.
Daily application. Adapt practical timing to actual heat, cold, shift work, and the resources available. A calendar date helps organise reading but does not override circumstances.
Reading limit. Neither nationality nor a geographic direction determines a person’s treatment.

Care before a problem becomes established
不治已病治未病,不治已乱治未乱。
Editorial translation
Attend to illness before it is established, and to disorder before it is established.
Meaning. The passage emphasises preparation and care before a problem has fully developed. Its rhetorical contrast should be read in context, not as a rejection of treating existing illness.
Daily application. Maintain routines before they repeatedly break down. Make a small practical adjustment when a workload becomes unsustainable, and seek assessment for ongoing symptoms.
Reading limit. It does not promise prevention of every disease, justify medication without need, or replace treatment when someone is ill.

Spring: let intention emerge
夜卧早起,广步于庭。
Editorial translation
Retire later and rise early; walk at ease in the courtyard.
Meaning. The same passage says “以使志生”: allow intention to arise. Movement and the disposition of the mind appear together.
Daily application. Resume a familiar activity gradually and choose a manageable beginning. If mornings move earlier, preserve adequate sleep.
Reading limit. The historical instruction is not a modern prescription to reduce sleep.

Summer: allow outward expression
使志无怒,使华英成秀。
Editorial translation
Keep intention free of anger; let flowering come to fullness.
Meaning. The summer passage describes flourishing and outward expression. Its seasonal imagery offers a disposition, not a requirement to be endlessly active.
Daily application. Use cooler settings for activity when hot, and keep space for meals, rest, and social contact that suits you.
Reading limit. Do not read the chapter’s sun-related language as advice to ignore modern heat and UV precautions.

Autumn: settle and gather
早卧早起,与鸡俱兴。使志安宁。
Editorial translation
Retire early and rise early, rising with the chickens; keep intention peaceful.
Meaning. The passage goes on to describe gathering the spirit. Gathering means a change of emphasis toward steadiness, not complete withdrawal.
Daily application. Reduce one unnecessary evening demand while keeping a regular sleep opportunity and manageable activity.
Reading limit. Animal and daylight references belong to historical life; apply the intention to present working conditions.

Winter: conserve and keep warmth
无扰乎阳,早卧晚起,必待日光。
Editorial translation
Do not disturb yang; retire early and rise later, waiting for daylight.
Meaning. Winter’s storage appears within “autumn and winter nourish yin,” while the same chapter asks that yang be protected. The two are complementary.
Daily application. Protect recovery, use comfortable clothing, and begin movement gradually. If work fixes waking time, organise adequate sleep around it.
Reading limit. Storage is not a requirement for inactivity or strong warming supplements.
